Sustainable Sanitation and Water Renewal Systems (SSWARS) is a non profit making, Non-Governmental organization registered to operate in Uganda. SSWARS was certified and duly registered on 30th September 2005 by the National Board for Registration of NGOs in Uganda.
SSWARS plans and implements people-centered approaches to sustainable sanitation and water supply. The key objective is to develop, improve and sustain the status of the communities through use of sustainable and renewable systems with a prime objective of reducing risk of exposure to poor sanitation and water related diseases, and ultimately alleviate poverty amongst the communities. The overall goal is efficient sustainable utilization and recycling of resources.
The mode of implementation is through involving communities, right from the onset of projects. SSWARS conducts sensitization campaigns for cross cutting age groups in order to plan, train, construct, operate, maintain and manage sustainable sanitation and water supply and waste recycling systems. A vicious cycle of project evaluation and collection of lessons from past practices is maintained at the end of each project to culture a sense of project ownership and sustainability among the beneficiaries.
SSWARS’ mission is to contribute to achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by improving the communities' standards of living through planning and implementation of sustainable closed loop sanitation and water supply systems, and to reduce the possible risk of disease outbreaks related to poor sanitation practices.
The vision of SSWARS is to be the leading NGO in the implementation of sustainable sanitation systems (incorporating resource re-use) and water supply infrastructure in Uganda and in the region by 2025.
SSWARS is governed by a Board of Directors comprising of five (5) highly distinguished academicians and professionals.
SSWARS management is headed by the Executive Director (ED) assisted by two (2) Deputies, Treasurer/ Accountant and Secretary. The ED reports to the Board of Directors. The top most organ is the Annual General Meeting

SSWARS plans, implements and promotes sanitation and water supply infrastructure that are sustainable in the short, medium and long term. This means, systems that are cheap, easy to build, as well as operate and maintain.
SSWARS also is involved in the design of innovative water, excreta disposal and solid waste recycling systems.
